Oprah Winfrey has a past- well who the hell doesn’t?

Kitty Kelley is one of those writer pimps who makes money off the back of other’s hard work, she in a female Ian Halperin, Pauly Reynolds in drag,  a leech, a parasite, a hack. She’s the kind of author who rakes through the muck, gets out a sieve, filters away all the hard graft and the chunks of success to find the trace of dirt needed to besmirch the host. I dislike people like her a great deal.

How is raking up Oprah Winfrey’s past of public interest? How is questioning aged relatives with probably numerous axes to grind a worthwhile exercise? How can Oprah repudiate claims that sold her body for money ( to whom?) or that she exaggerated her poverty or her sexual abuse ( just a bit of rape then, or maybe just sexual assualt eh?)? How can anyone repudiate such ethereal claims?

Many people have suffered horrific pasts and rose above them. People have grappled with their demons and defeated them, putting them under lock and key, where they can hear their occasional cries for attention but avoid visiting the jail to often. Many people have made hard choices in life, where options were limited and survival the only goal, many people have suffered, fought, battled, dragged themselves up time and time again when faced with impossible odds to carry on, to succeed, to be more than the sum of their parts, to be more than a statistic, to be more than a victim of circumstance, to be more than a victim of abuse or a broken childhood, to be more than a victim.

To be more.

If such a person manages to claw their way free of a quagmire that can so easily smother a life, how fucking DARE some smug pilot fish like Kelley come farting in, write some piece of poison crap and hope to make money off that person’s struggle?

Oprah Winfrey is more than a person, she is a huge powerful industry, but she made it through the sweat, toil and  iron will. She is a product of her own making. I’m no great fan of hers, but she was there on her couch talking and interviewing and speaking out back when I was a grubby teenager, she’s a consummate professional and the apex interviewer in her field. She played her hand, she won her game. I don’t care if she has a closet full of latex or if she and her partner have only ever spoken on the phone. I don’t care if her poverty was not ‘as bad’ as she claims, I don’t care if her farts smell like magnolia.

She is where she is because she is who she is and she is what she is, a survivor, a talent, a woman of immense character who has had her finger on the pulse for almost a lifetime.

Kitty Kelley, you are a complete and utter shitehawk and I hope your book bombs.

Agree with you on Kitty Muckraker and all her ilk, but it’s typical Daily Femheil fodder.

Also agree fair dues to Winfrey on her acumen and work ethic. Where I would begin to disagree would be that an essential part of her shtick has been to have folks ‘come clean’ about their lives on air, and not just because that is good for ratings but because it is in some way redemptive and cathartic.

So, if I were Oprah and I had any things to ‘come clean’ about, I would interview myself on the show (using cutaway questions she has put to others on air over the years) and pre-empt the shit out of Ms Muckraker’s book.

But she’s the ring master Conan, nobody has to go on her show, nobody has to bare their souls or talk publicly about anything. No on holds a gun to their head. What Oprah wishes to divulge about her own past ought to be up to her, and not some muckraker out to make a fast buck. Certainly her sexuality is her own damn business. And who can verify sexual abuse? The abuser or the abused, there is no one else.

Agreed. Perhaps I’m over-egging it but my perception of her role and the function of that aspect of her show has been to act as a sort of ‘rite of passage’ that has existed in one public form or another going back to cave-dwelling times. Hence the catharsis and the redemtive power of the thing. It’s a secular manifestion of human ritualistic practice, like ‘confession’ or ‘sin eating’ where the flawed woo meister, the ‘wounded healer’ hears and absorbs the flaws of the confessed, who then leave ‘and sin no more’. The ritual is valid only if the woo meister him/herself has honestly exposed their own flaws and human frailty, hence the recent pleading of the ‘wounded healer’ argument by our local catholic hierarchy. It was patently dishonest because they had been holding themselves up as paragons of moral virtue, to be emulated by the rest of us.

      As I say, I’m probably over-thinking the whole thing. She’s a talk-show host, innit.

I’m pretty sure over the years she has spoken about her earlier drug use (cocaine), her food issues, her fears, her flaws, her attempts to control her weight her difficulties regarding work, how upset she was over the loss of her pets and a myriad of other inner workings. That’s WHY people relate to her and have related to her.
I’m not sure how much more people expect her to give over for public consumption. Is she not allowed some privacy because she is a public person? Is she not entitled to her past, to reveal what she wishes and indeed has done at length, without revealing EVERY SINGLE aspect of her life?
Cui buno on such a book? Why good pimp Kelley of course.

And don’t forget her publishers, they must have paid an enormous advance.

      • fatmammycat Says:

Aye, them too. But publishers have no souls anyway.

    Couldn’t agree more, FMC.
Kelly wants to tear her apart for a profit.

I’m also not a fan of Oprah but it’s hard not to admire her industry and resolve. Plus she’s done more for literacy, to get folks reading more so than any other single person I could point to, and that’s a hell of an accomplishment.

  4. fatmammycat Says:

She’s a dirt bird Medbh, she claims she knows the identity of Oprah’s father but won’t release it until Oprah’s mother tells her daughter. I mean come fucking on. Oh and one of the most ‘shocking’ revelations is that Oprah was once too scared to use her pool as she felt she was fat and she was worried a pap might photograph her. Really, REALLY? This is a woman who has OPENLY discussed her battle with weight for years, no fucking shit she might ahve bad days, WOW, what insight.
If Kelley has one ounce of integrity, one sliver of Oprah’s drive she might be more in life than a fucking virus sucking from a host body.

    I am begrouched today.

  5. Medbh Says:

Kelly’s a toxic slimeball, for sure.

    What’s the haps, grouchy?
    Are you overworked today?

I am rather Darling, and unexpected addition asked for to a piece of work that was finished. Now stuck with it for another few days. Would have been much easier if this had been mentioned at the beginning and not the end. IF you follow my ramble.

    I do.
Buck up, we’ll be stepping out with the ladies who dress up before you know it.

Huh, I thought Kitty Kelly had already carked it. Damn. Is it really a smart idea to aggravate Oprah’s Legion, though? Those women are vicious in their support of her. If I were Kitty Kelly, I’d be watching my back.

I was managing a book store when Oprah came out with her Book Club thing, that was the bane of my existence, those women drove me insane. It wasn’t bad enough that I didn’t know what book Oprah had on at the moment, but I was supposed to know all about Oprah, too. Dear god, it was like a cult for them.

Kelly’s just irked she’s never been asked on.

Sorry about the extra work. For a small fee, you can consult with a psychic who will let your know what people really want when they… AAARRRRGGHHH!!! No, no, put down the shoe! I didn’t mention Reiki! Really! Oh shit! :::ducks and runs:::
