Can you separate the person from the deed?

December 7, 2010

I sat staring at a trailer for The Beaver yesterday in stupefied silence. What the holy hell is Jodie Foster doing? Of course it’s not her that squicks my ick, but old crazy woman hitting anti-semitic Mel, one frayed string away from a full snap in my opinion. I can no longer watch him in films,  just can’t separate him as an actor from him as a mean basket case.

He’s not the only one. David Boreanaz half killed family man and all round good guy Agent Booth by cheating on his real wife in real life.  I don’t care how gifted Roman Polanski is, I can’t watch his films without thinking of him as a child rapist. I cannot and will not watch Charlie Sheen in that stupid sitcom thing he is in, no matter how much Gothy swears it is hilarious. He’s a pig and he makes my skin crawl.

But Gibson, I grew up on his films from Mad Max  and Lethal Weapon to Ransom, he was a superstar, he can direct good films. But in front of the camera? I don’t know sugar-tits, it’s hard to empathise with a character when you know the actor is the sort of person who can slap the mother of his child hard enough to dislodge the crown of a tooth.  I don’t know that my cognitive dissonance skills are that powerful.

You have anyone like that?
