From first of February customers who use less than 2 units a day will incur a standard charge. They get away with it because the are not classed as a wholly owned state body, they operate like any other business and are free to make decision perceived to be in the businesses interest, at their boards discretion. Many service providers apply minimum charges for their usage. It is not illegal it is just immoral for the state owned esb to do it. It is nothing more than a stealth tax. I am sure they will argue losing out to “competition “, maintenance and admin costs forced their hand. In reality, minimum pricing along with having to rent infrastructure and facilities from the esb means the likes of board gas and airtricity pose no real threat. As long as the so called National Grid sits on the ESBs balance sheet there is no competition. It really is terrible, old people are the ones who will suffer most from this. I
